The Broadway Production in Your Head (and the One-Man Puppet Show Running It)

If you have a visionary ADHD brain, you know exactly what it feels like to have a 100-piece orchestra, a world-class choreography team, and a revolving stage set for a Tony-award-winning production running 24/7 inside your mind. Your ideas are massive, technicolor, and brilliant. You can see the final curtain call of your business launch, your home renovation, or your creative masterpiece in vivid detail before you’ve even picked up a pen.

The struggle, however, is that while the "Broadway production" in your head is ready for opening night, the person hired to manage the actual logistics: the lighting, the ticket sales, the snacks, and the scheduling: is essentially a one-man puppet show. You are trying to run a multi-million dollar mental production with a single set of hands and a very small wooden puppet.

This disconnect isn't because you aren't "trying hard enough" or because you lack discipline. It is a fundamental biological reality of the ADHD brain: your "Insight" system (the Broadway show) is exceptionally high-functioning, while your "Analytic" system (the puppet show) has a much smaller bandwidth. Learning to bridge this gap is the secret to moving from overwhelmed visionary to high-achieving executor.

Why Does My Brain Feel Like This?

It turns out there is a very specific reason why your brain can solve a complex creative problem in a flash but struggles to remember where you put your keys or how to start a spreadsheet.

Recent research has highlighted that the ADHD brain actually prioritizes a different type of processing than the neurotypical brain. A 2026 study by Maisano et al. found that individuals with higher ADHD symptoms are significantly better at creative problem-solving because they rely on sudden insight (the "Aha!" moment) rather than step-by-step analytic reasoning.

The study showed that while ADHD symptoms can make "Type 2" processing: the conscious, deliberate, step-by-step work: more difficult, they actually facilitate "Type 1" processing, which is unconscious, associative, and intuitive. In other words, your brain is literally wired to produce the "Broadway show" of big ideas through insight, but it finds the "puppet show" of step-by-step executive function much more taxing.

Normalizing the Visionary Struggle

If you’ve spent years feeling like you’re "all talk and no action," I want you to take a deep breath. You are a high achiever who has been trying to run a massive operation with tools that weren't designed for the scale of your vision.

When you have an interest-based nervous system, your brain doesn't engage with tasks based on "importance" or "priority" in the traditional sense. It engages based on interest, novelty, challenge, or urgency. The Broadway production is interesting and novel. The puppet show of time management and administrative details? Not so much.

This is not a character flaw. It’s biology. Your brain is a specialist in "Insight Solving Modes." You are the person who sees the solution others miss. You are the one who connects dots that aren't even on the same page. The fact that the "puppet strings" of daily organization get tangled doesn't take away from the brilliance of the show.

Practical Stage Management for Your Brain

So, how do we get the Broadway production out of your head and onto the actual stage? We don't do it by "trying harder" to be a better puppeteer. We do it by building better systems and hiring a "stage management" mindset.

1. Externalize the Script

Your brain is for having ideas, not holding them. When the Broadway show starts spinning, it creates massive mental clutter. Use an "Inbox" system: a single place where every idea goes immediately so your brain can stop trying to juggle them. This is a core part of ADHD coaching; we work on creating external structures so your internal mental space stays clear for the actual creative work.

2. Shrink the Puppets

If a task feels too big, your brain will see it as the entire Broadway show and freeze. Break it down until it is "puppet-sized." Instead of "Write the Business Plan," the task is "Open a blank Google Doc and title it." Small, manageable wins reduce the friction that leads to task paralysis.

3. Use "Body Doubling" as Your Crew

Even the best directors have a crew. If you struggle to start a "puppet show" task (like taxes or organizing), have someone sit with you: either virtually or in person. This is called body doubling, and it provides the gentle social pressure your brain needs to stay on track.

4. Build Systems, Not Just Habits

As a professional organizer, I always tell my clients: function over aesthetics. Your organization systems should work with your brain, not against it. If you always drop your mail on the kitchen counter, put a beautiful basket on the counter. Don't try to force yourself to walk to an office you never enter.

From Overwhelmed to Opening Night

The goal isn't to stop having the Broadway production. We love the Broadway production! It’s where your genius lives. The goal is to acknowledge that the "one-man puppet show" of your executive function needs support.

When we work together in ADHD coaching, we aren't trying to "fix" your brain. We are building the infrastructure: the stage, the lighting rigs, and the backstage crew: that allows your visionary ideas to actually happen in the real world. We focus on reducing friction and building systems that fit your unique life.

You are not failing. You are just a director who needs a better production team. And once you have the right supports in place, there is no limit to what your "Broadway" brain can achieve.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I have so many ideas but never finish any of them?

This is common in ADHD because the "insight" part of your brain (generating ideas) is highly active, while the "analytic" part (planning and execution) requires more effort. Your brain gets a dopamine hit from the new idea, but the follow-through feels like "work," which the ADHD brain often avoids due to executive function challenges.

Does ADHD make you more creative?

Research, including the study by Maisano et al. (2026), suggests that ADHD symptom magnitude is linked to better creative problem-solving and a reliance on sudden insight. This means that while ADHD presents challenges, it also offers a unique "visionary" strength in finding innovative solutions.

How can ADHD coaching help me manage my ideas?

ADHD coaching provides the "scaffolding" your brain needs. We help you create personalized systems for organization and time management, teach you how to break down big visions into actionable steps, and provide accountability to help you actually follow through on your creative goals.

What is the best way to organize an ADHD brain?

The best system is the one you will actually use. We focus on "brain-friendly" organization, which often means visual systems, reducing the number of steps required to complete a task, and building systems around your existing natural habits rather than trying to force new, neurotypical ones.
