Executive Function Coaching 101: A Beginner’s Guide to Mastering Your Creative Brain

Hey friends!
Let me ask you a question. Have you ever walked into a room to grab your car keys, but then noticed a half-finished painting, which reminded you that you needed to buy more cerulean blue, which led you to opening your laptop, which led to you researching the history of pigment manufacturing in the 18th century... and forty-five minutes later, you’re still standing in the middle of the room, holding a half-eaten granola bar, and you still don’t have your keys?
If your brain feels like a browser with 47 tabs open, and three of them are playing music you can’t find, welcome to the club. We are the visionaries, the creators, and the "big idea" people. But sometimes, those big ideas feel less like a spark of genius and more like a glitter bomb went off in a wind tunnel.
That’s where Executive Function Coaching comes in. Think of it as the "Chief Operating Officer" for your brilliant, chaotic, beautiful brain. Let’s dive into how it works and why it’s the secret sauce for actually finishing that novel, launching that business, or just finding your keys before you're late for the third time this week.
So, What the Heck is Executive Function Anyway?
Imagine your brain is a high-end restaurant. Your creativity is the world-class chef in the back, whipping up five-star dishes that no one has ever seen before. But for those dishes to actually reach the table, you need a front-of-house manager. You need someone to take the orders, manage the waitstaff, keep track of the inventory, and make sure the kitchen doesn't catch on fire.
Executive Function is that manager. It’s a set of mental skills that live in the prefrontal cortex (the part of your brain right behind your forehead). It handles things like:
Working Memory: Holding onto information long enough to use it.
Impulse Control: Stopping yourself from buying that 12-pack of vintage typewriters at 2 AM.
Task Initiation: Actually starting the thing you know you need to do.
Organization: Putting the "like with like" so you can actually find your stuff.
When you have ADHD, your "manager" is often "on a break", or perhaps they’ve gone on a spontaneous sabbatical to Bali (funsees!). Executive function coaching isn’t about fixing a "broken" brain (literally hate it when anyone refers to a brain as broken so let's just pretend I did NOT); it’s about hiring a temporary consultant to help you build systems so your inner chef can keep cooking without the chaos.

The "Idea Explosion" (A.K.A. Why Being Creative is Exhausting)
Most of my clients are high-achieving, visionary people. You guys have ideas coming out of your ears! But the "Idea Explosion" is real. You see a blank canvas or a new business plan, and 500 possibilities hit you at once.
The problem isn't a lack of ideas; it's Idea Overload. Without a system to catch those ideas, they just swirl around in your head, draining your energy and making you feel stuck. It’s like trying to catch a waterfall in a teacup.
In our coaching sessions, we work on building "external scaffolding." These are tools outside of your head: like apps, planners, or physical bins: that hold the weight of your ideas so your brain doesn't have to.
How Coaching Actually Helps (It’s Not Just "Use a Planner")
I know, I know. If one more person tells you to "just get a planner," you’re going to scream. Typical advice doesn't work for creative ADHD brains because it’s usually too rigid.
Executive function coaching is different because it’s personalized and practical. Here’s what we actually do:
The "Why" vs. The "How": You probably already know what you need to do (e.g., "I need to do my taxes"). A coach helps you figure out the how: the tiny, friction-light steps that get you from "staring at a pile of receipts" to "hitting submit."
Customized Systems: We don't do "one size fits all." If you hate digital calendars, we don't use them! We find what clicks for you. Maybe it's a giant whiteboard, maybe it's color-coded sticky notes, or maybe it's a specific digital workflow.
The Body Double: Sometimes you just need someone in the room (or on the screen) to help you stay on task. It’s like having a gym buddy for your brain.
Grace and Validation: We spend a lot of time unlearning the "shame" of not being "normal." We focus on your strengths, not just your struggles.
Meet Your Coach

I’m not here to turn you into a robot. I’m here to help you build a framework that supports your creativity so you can finally flow instead of just flounder.
